Startup OLÉ Salamanca: The Ecosystem Networking Hub Is Coming

If you’re an entrepreneur, investor or tech leader, mark your calendars for October 8-10, 2024, because Startup OLÉ is set to transform once again Salamanca into the nerve center of Spain’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Held in the picturesque town of Salamanca, this event is not the classical tech show. If you want to connect with the movers and shakers of the Spanish and Ibero-American startup scene, well… this is your golden opportunity.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss Startup OLÉ

If you are looking for flashy lights, grand displays and over the top world class showcases, this is NOT your place to be. Salamanca’s Startup OLÉ is renowned for their “simplicity” on bringing together the decision makers of the startup world on a completely FREE attendance event.

Here’s our top 3 reasons why you should make it a priority:

1. A Who’s Who of the Spanish and International Startup Scene: This event attracts top investors, corporate leaders, public officials, and startup founders mainly from Spain but also from across Ibero-America, Europe, and the USA. You’ll find representatives from major corporations like Iberdrola and Acciona to government institutions from Spain like Madrid, Salamanca, Andalucia and distiguish international institutions such as the Johns Hopkins University and more.

2. Engaging Activities: With activities designed to foster interaction, from round tables and plenary talks to pitch competitions and business rounds, you’ll have the chance to meet and engage with key players in the industry. Expect forums on investment, cybersecurity, rural innovation, and much more. The event also includes a hackathon, startup fair, and various networking activities such as cocktails and concerts, ensuring there’s never a dull moment. The intimate setting of Salamanca’s Palacio de Congresos and Colegio Arzobispo Fonseca provides the perfect backdrop for invaluable exchanges.

3. Collaborative Environment: Last but not least, Startup OLÉ is known for its familiar atmosphere, where the energy is always positive. The people are not only interesting but also friendly and open to business. The event fosters a welcoming environment, making everyone feel at home and encouraging engaging conversations.

Book Early: Hotels and other accommodations in Salamanca fill up quickly during Startup OLÉ. Secure your stay as soon as possible to avoid any last-minute hassles.

Travel Smart: Salamanca is easily accessible from major cities like Madrid and Barcelona. Plan your travel itinerary to ensure you arrive in time for the kickoff events.

Highlights from Alhambra Venture 2024: Key Takeaways and GSTF On Tour

From July 10-12, 2024, under the summer sun, the 11th edition took place in Granada, attracting around 1,300 attendees. Based on strong recommendations and our commitment to promoting events and opportunities for startups, we decided to cover and experience Alhambra Venture firsthand.

In this review, we’ll highlight key insights and standout moments, explore the pros and cons and share why you should consider or not attending Alhambra Venture. Lets start with it!

Opening Ceremony and Cultural Tour

The adventure kicked off on July 10th, with a mix of history and modern-day entrepreneurship on a closed program for selected guests. We started at the Royal Chapel of Granada, where the Catholic Monarchs are buried. Father Manuel Reyes led us through this historic site, making us feel the weight of history as we began our journey into the future.

After the tour, we headed to the Hotel Santa Paula for the official welcome. This event was moderated by Mariló Sanchez-Fuentes and brought the invited key figures of the conference together. Mariló reminded us how this city was the launching point for Columbus’s expedition—a pitch that secured the funds from the kings for a venture that reshaped the world.

Quico Chirino from Diario Ideal emphasized the media’s role in boosting entrepreneurial efforts, stressing how vital it is for startups to get their stories out there. Then, Marifran Carazo, the Mayor of Granada, took the stage, saying, “Entrepreneurship must be the lever that propels our city forward.” She talked about how Granada is using AI to enhance tourism, aiming to blend the old with the new in exciting ways and the openness of the city to technology and business.

Kissy Chandiramani, the Mayor of Ceuta, gave a brief but powerful pitch on why startups should consider setting up in Ceuta, highlighting the city’s tax benefits and digital transformation initiatives. Her talk was a reminder of the regional advantages within Spain that startups can leverage.

The opening ceremony concluded with an outdoor cocktail on the hotel yard, offering snacks to facilitate networking conversations among attendees.

Various speakers highlighted the numerous government programs available to entrepreneurs, emphasizing the benefits and support structures in place to help startups and businesses thrive. The ceremony set an energetic first tone for the rest of the event, blending Granada’s historical heritage with its potential as a tech and innovation hub.

After the official dinner on the 11th, we took a group of entrepreneurs on an exciting night journey through the city with the GSTF On Tour experience, aimed to provide a unique blend of cultural immersion, networking, and pitching opportunities for participants.

This immersive experience not only allowed the entrepreneurs to bond over shared interests but also to draw inspiration from the historic surroundings. Amidst the lively atmosphere, entrepreneurs had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas in front of their peers.

The pitch competition showcased a variety of innovative ideas, but three startups stood out:

  • 1st Prize: Lucas Oliviella from Tokenized Green, whose project focuses on sustainable solutions through tokenization.

The evening was a chance for these startups to gain recognition but also an opportunity for all participants to network, forge new connections in a relaxed and engaging setting, and celebrate achievements. The capacity of the tour was limited due to city restrictions for guided groups, and we meet with more participants in a renowed nightclub where VIP tables were reserved.

Interview with Antonio Romero advisor from Alhambra Venture

During Alhambra Venture 2024, we had the opportunity to talk with Antonio Romero, advisor of Alhambra Venture and General Partner of Sherry Ventures. Antonio shared his insights on the startup ecosystem in southern Spain and the future directions for Alhambra Venture.

Experience Alhambra Venture 2024 Live 🔴

As usual, we wanted to bring you the feeling and atmosphere of the conference, LIVE, no cuts no editions. Our livestream includes enhanced coverage with real-time interviews, giving you an immersive experience and a front-row seat to all the action.

Dive into the heart of the Alhambra Venture 2024 and explore the highlights by watching the livestream here:

Top things we liked

1. Intimate Setting: The smaller, more intimate setting allowed for deeper connections and more meaningful interactions. This is perfect for those who prefer a personal touch and the ability to network closely with other attendees, speakers, and investors. This also make it easier to get a first-hand approach to startups and their innovations, allowing for in-depth conversations and detailed feedback.

2. Familiar Environment and Good Vibes: The event had a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, making it easy for participants to feel comfortable and engaged. The positive vibes encouraged collaboration and the exchange of ideas.

3. Cultural Immersion: Activities were held in various historical places, offering a unique blend of cultural immersion. As you know, we love these kinds of experiences and are the first to promote them. We believe they add significant value beyond the usual conference experience by allowing participants to network and connect in a more engaging and unique way.

4. Plans for International Expansion: Despite the current limited international presence, Alhambra Venture is planning to create a bridge with Silicon Valley through their mission program with the chamber of commerce of Granada. This initiative aims to expand the global reach of participating startups and foster international collaborations.

Considerations

  • Event Size: We find the size almost perfect, not too small not too big, but for those seeking the buzz and extensive networking opportunities of a larger conference, the smaller scale of Alhambra Venture might be a drawback. That being said, being in a more focused environment allows startups to receive more personalized attention from investors and mentors.
  • Heat: Be prepared as Granada’s summer heat can be quite intense. This might be uncomfortable for some attendees, especially during outdoor activities.
  • Language Barrier: While many participants spoke English, almost all sessions were held in Spanish. There are instances where non-Spanish speakers might face language barriers.
  • Regional Government Insights: The event provided deep insights into the local startup ecosystem of southern Spain, which can be a significant advantage for those looking to invest or collaborate within the region.

Our take away is that the event has a nostalgic feel, reminiscent of local gatherings, but with a clear aim for international expansion. This blend offers a unique charm, combining the best of local traditions with a global perspective. It’s ideal for early-stage entrepreneurs with traction who are seeking angel investors, especially Spanish speakers. Additionally, it can be a very attractive for international investors to shop around. In top, the event provides a unique cultural immersion experience, going beyond the usual conference setting, allowing attendees to network and connect in a more engaging, fun and enriching way.

This program effectively removes barriers to international entrepreneurship, especially in an era where digital transformation is reshaping the business landscape. The potential of e-Residency to drive global business expansion was underscored by the presence of startups like Dooiu, Teco Mobility, and Thxu, which had the opportunity to pitch to investors during the event.

Estonia’s thriving startup ecosystem, which secured over $750 million in venture capital in the first half of 2022 alone, is a testament to the immense opportunities offered through e-Residency. The Unique Pitch Competition on the Bus

The bus ride through Malta wasn’t just a journey from one location to another, it was an engaging activity that transformed a bus ride into a stage where startups battled it out in a high-energy pitch competition. This was not your typical pitch setting. Startups had to adapt to the moving environment, mastering their nerves and honing their pitch to perfection, all while navigating the turns and traverses of Malta’s scenic routes.

What made the bus ride truly unique was the level of interaction and engagement it facilitated. In a traditional pitch competition, startups are often separated from the audience by physical and psychological barriers. On the bus, these barriers dissolved. Investors, mentors, and fellow entrepreneurs were all part of the intimate audience, leading to immediate feedback and dynamic discussions right after each pitch on a great and distended ambience.

The competition reached its climax with the announcement of the winners, who were awarded valuable prizes that promised to further their entrepreneurial journeys. Joshua Ajayi founder of Paydai took home an Annual Membership, providing him year-long access to networking events and resources. Warren Mulvey Co-Founder of Affinity Sales Group won a GSTF25 PRO Ticket, granting him entry to the Global Sales Tech Festival and Katalin Ringer received a GSTF On Tour Ticket, allowing her access to all the global stops of the GSTF tour.

The bus ride also turned into a rolling networking event, where conversations started on the bus continued well into the after parties. This ongoing dialogue allowed for deeper connections, as participants shared insights and explored potential collaborations in a more relaxed, yet still professionally engaging, atmosphere.

GLOBAL Sales Tech Festival 2024: The event that is becoming a signature

The GLOBAL Sales Tech Festival 2024 (#GSTF24) is shaping up to be the signature warm-up event of MWC/4YFN, and we’re more than happy about the traction it’s getting. Born out of a pressing need for startups to boost sales and pitch their growth blueprints to investors, this year’s fest was a major draw. Over 500 tech enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, and notable figures from the tech world attended.

With a lineup of 54 international speakers and 7 hosts, the festival offered an extensive range of content, covering a wide array of topics in technology, sales and business. hese sessions provided actionable insights and stimulated debates, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the tech world.

Our network of partnerships truly shined this year, with more than 50 collaborators adding their unique flavors to the festival’s vibe. These alliances not only enhanced the overall experience for attendees but also painted a comprehensive picture of the tech and sales landscape. The shiny star was The Social Hub, our host partner where the event took place and made our guests comfortable with their incredible installations and warm staff. Taking cues from the festival’s core themes highlighted on GSTFestival.com, such as innovation, sustainability, and the future of sales tech, our partners helped to weave these essential threads throughout the event, ensuring a rich and varied content and interaction.

Panels, Sessions and Speakers
