Autonomo vs PYME: Which Path Should You Take in Spain 2024? https://clubglobals.com/autonomo-vs-pyme-which-path-should-you-take-in-spain-2024/ https://clubglobals.com/autonomo-vs-pyme-which-path-should-you-take-in-spain-2024/#respond Wed, 31 Jul 2024 14:30:23 +0000 https://clubglobals.com/?p=30999 The post Autonomo vs PYME: Which Path Should You Take in Spain 2024? appeared first on Club GLOBALS.

Autonomo vs PYME: Which Path Should You Take in Spain 2024?

Starting a business in Spain can be an exciting journey, but choosing the right legal structure is crucial. Two common options are becoming self-employed (Autónomo) or establishing a small or medium-sized enterprise (PYME – Pequeña o Mediana Empresa). Each has its own set of advantages, disadvantages, legal and fiscal considerations. This guide will help you understand the key differences and decide which path might be the best for your business goals.

Autónomo

Overview

  • Sole responsibility for business operations.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Simpler setup process.

Advantages

  • Lower initial costs
  • Simpler administration
  • Full control over business decisions

Disadvantages

  • Unlimited liability
  • Harder to secure large financing
  • More personal involvement required

Administration

  • Registration: Must register with the Social Security system and the Spanish Tax Agency.
  • Taxes and Contributions: Responsible for paying self-employment taxes and contributions.
  • Accounting: Simpler accounting requirements.

To register as self-employed in Spain, the first step is to register in the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA), a free procedure that involves paying the self-employed fee. The flat rate for the first year is approximately 80 euros per month, while the standard fee is around 300 to 320 euros per month, depending on income and bonuses. This procedure can be done on the same day. It is also necessary to register with the Treasury using form 036 or 037, a free and immediate process if done online, or which may take one or two days if done in person.

Other aspects to consider for the self-employed include civil liability and accident insurance, which can cost between 150 and 500 euros per year depending on the type of activity. Accounting and tax advice is another recurring expense, with an approximate cost of 50 to 150 euros per month.

Example

A graphic design freelancer might face initial registration costs in the RETA and the Treasury for free, with a self-employed fee of 80 euros per month during the first year under the flat rate. The costs of accounting advice would be 50 euros per month, and the total time to complete all the procedures would be less than a week. Additional annual costs, including insurance and software, would be approximately 300 euros.

PYME

Overview

  • Can have multiple employees.
  • More structured organization.
  • Potential for higher growth and expansion.

Advantages

  • Limited liability
  • Easier access to financing
  • Potential for growth

Disadvantages

  • Higher setup and operational costs
  • More complex administration
  • Shared decision-making

Administration

  • Legal Entity Registration: Must be registered as a legal entity (e.g., SL, SA).
  • Taxes and Contributions: Subject to corporate taxes and more comprehensive accounting regulations.
  • Tax incentives: Can benefit from various tax incentives and grants for businesses.

To open a company in Spain, one of the first steps is to choose the appropriate legal form. The Limited Company (SL) requires a minimum share capital of 3,000 euros, which can be in cash or assets. Notary and registration fees usually range between 500 and 1,000 euros, and the process can take between one and four weeks. On the other hand, the Public Limited Company (SA) needs a minimum share capital of 60,000 euros, with at least 25% paid up at the time of incorporation. Notary and registration fees for an SA are usually higher, around 1,000 to 1,500 euros, and the process can take between two and six weeks.

Among the administrative procedures necessary to establish a company, is the reservation of the name in the Commercial Registry, which costs approximately 13 euros and can take one or two business days. Next, it is necessary to open a bank account and deposit the share capital, a procedure that depends on the bank and generally takes one or two business days. Obtaining the Tax Identification Number (NIF) is free and may take one to two weeks. The public deed of incorporation, another essential step, has a notarial cost of approximately 150 to 300 euros and can be completed in one or two days. Finally, registration in the Commercial Registry costs between 250 and 350 euros and usually takes one or two weeks.

Additionally, other expenses must be considered such as licenses and permits, the cost of which varies depending on the type of activity and location, and may require more time depending on the city council. Legal and accounting advice is also important, with an approximate cost of 50 to 150 euros per month.

Example

A digital marketing company (SL) would need a share capital of 3,000 euros, with notary and registration costs of 800 euros and a total time of approximately three weeks to complete all the procedures. In addition, it would have additional annual costs of around 1,000 euros for licenses, advice, and insurance.

Highlights from Alhambra Venture 2024: Key Takeaways and GSTF On Tour

From July 10-12, 2024, under the summer sun, the 11th edition took place in Granada, attracting around 1,300 attendees. Based on strong recommendations and our commitment to promoting events and opportunities for startups, we decided to cover and experience Alhambra Venture firsthand.

In this review, we’ll highlight key insights and standout moments, explore the pros and cons and share why you should consider or not attending Alhambra Venture. Lets start with it!

Opening Ceremony and Cultural Tour

The adventure kicked off on July 10th, with a mix of history and modern-day entrepreneurship on a closed program for selected guests. We started at the Royal Chapel of Granada, where the Catholic Monarchs are buried. Father Manuel Reyes led us through this historic site, making us feel the weight of history as we began our journey into the future.

After the tour, we headed to the Hotel Santa Paula for the official welcome. This event was moderated by Mariló Sanchez-Fuentes and brought the invited key figures of the conference together. Mariló reminded us how this city was the launching point for Columbus’s expedition—a pitch that secured the funds from the kings for a venture that reshaped the world.

Quico Chirino from Diario Ideal emphasized the media’s role in boosting entrepreneurial efforts, stressing how vital it is for startups to get their stories out there. Then, Marifran Carazo, the Mayor of Granada, took the stage, saying, “Entrepreneurship must be the lever that propels our city forward.” She talked about how Granada is using AI to enhance tourism, aiming to blend the old with the new in exciting ways and the openness of the city to technology and business.

Kissy Chandiramani, the Mayor of Ceuta, gave a brief but powerful pitch on why startups should consider setting up in Ceuta, highlighting the city’s tax benefits and digital transformation initiatives. Her talk was a reminder of the regional advantages within Spain that startups can leverage.

The opening ceremony concluded with an outdoor cocktail on the hotel yard, offering snacks to facilitate networking conversations among attendees.

Various speakers highlighted the numerous government programs available to entrepreneurs, emphasizing the benefits and support structures in place to help startups and businesses thrive. The ceremony set an energetic first tone for the rest of the event, blending Granada’s historical heritage with its potential as a tech and innovation hub.

Amidst the lively atmosphere, entrepreneurs had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas in front of their peers.

  • 1st Prize: Lucas Oliviella from Tokenized Green, whose project focuses on sustainable solutions through tokenization.
  • 2nd Prize: Javier Perez from Bubbo.app, an app designed to optimize streaming reccomendations across all platforms.
  • 3rd Prize: Pedro Berrios from Gobcity, which offers innovative solutions for urban management and governance.

Top things we liked

1. Intimate Setting: The smaller, more intimate setting allowed for deeper connections and more meaningful interactions. This is perfect for those who prefer a personal touch and the ability to network closely with other attendees, speakers, and investors. This also make it easier to get a first-hand approach to startups and their innovations, allowing for in-depth conversations and detailed feedback.

2. Familiar Environment and Good Vibes: The event had a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, making it easy for participants to feel comfortable and engaged. The positive vibes encouraged collaboration and the exchange of ideas.

3. Cultural Immersion: Activities were held in various historical places, offering a unique blend of cultural immersion. As you know, we love these kinds of experiences and are the first to promote them. We believe they add significant value beyond the usual conference experience by allowing participants to network and connect in a more engaging and unique way.

4. Plans for International Expansion: Despite the current limited international presence, Alhambra Venture is planning to create a bridge with Silicon Valley through their mission program with the chamber of commerce of Granada. This initiative aims to expand the global reach of participating startups and foster international collaborations.

Considerations

  • Event Size: We find the size almost perfect, not too small not too big, but for those seeking the buzz and extensive networking opportunities of a larger conference, the smaller scale of Alhambra Venture might be a drawback. That being said, being in a more focused environment allows startups to receive more personalized attention from investors and mentors.
  • Heat: Be prepared as Granada’s summer heat can be quite intense. This might be uncomfortable for some attendees, especially during outdoor activities.
  • Language Barrier: While many participants spoke English, almost all sessions were held in Spanish. There are instances where non-Spanish speakers might face language barriers.
  • Regional Government Insights: The event provided deep insights into the local startup ecosystem of southern Spain, which can be a significant advantage for those looking to invest or collaborate within the region.

Our take away is that the event has a nostalgic feel, reminiscent of local gatherings, but with a clear aim for international expansion. This blend offers a unique charm, combining the best of local traditions with a global perspective. It’s ideal for early-stage entrepreneurs with traction who are seeking angel investors, especially Spanish speakers. Additionally, it can be a very attractive for international investors to shop around. In top, the event provides a unique cultural immersion experience, going beyond the usual conference setting, allowing attendees to network and connect in a more engaging, fun and enriching way.

Seed to Series A: Mastering the Hiring Strategy for Exponential Growth

Navigating the Transition from Seed to Series A

When we secure funding, is a moment of validation for any startup, signaling that the market believes in your vision and your potential for significant growth. However, transitioning from seed to Series A isn’t just about having more money in the bank; it’s about strategically deploying that capital to scale operations, especially your team. The decisions you make today will set the trajectory for your company’s future and can help you avoid series headaches once you raise for series A.

The Crucial Role of Strategic Hiring

At the heart of your growth strategy should be a clear focus on hiring. Not just hiring more people, but hiring the right people. Strategic hiring during this critical phase can dramatically influence your startup’s trajectory. As you prepare to expand, the temptation might be to fill positions quickly to keep pace with growth demands. However, the key is not just to fill roles quickly because you need people but to fill them with individuals who will drive and sustain your growth.

Implementing a Job Analysis Strategy: A Precision Tool in Talent Acquisition

Job analysis is your secret weapon. It’s not just about understanding the roles you need to fill but dissecting these roles to their core components. This precision allows you to identify exactly what skills, knowledge, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAO) like work values and leadership styles these candidates need to have. Trust me, you can avoid the complexity of rearranging a quickly assembled but completely mismatched team.

From Broad Roles to Specific Actions

Every role should be broken down from broad responsibilities to specific work activities. For example, a Marketing Specialist’s role isn’t just about enhancing brand awareness; it involves conducting detailed market research, crafting targeted marketing campaigns, managing digital platforms, and analyzing the results to refine strategies further. This detailed breakdown helps in crafting precise job descriptions and interview questions that target the exact needs of your organization.

The Holistic Approach: Hiring Beyond Skills

While technical skills are crucial, the holistic approach of considering KSAOs ensures you don’t just fill a position but find the right fit for your company’s culture and values. This means considering personality traits, work styles, and cultural fit which are equally important. For instance, hiring a brilliant software developer who prefers working alone might backfire in a team-oriented culture. Be sure you know the team culture and how to hire for it.

Mario Paladini interviewing Silvia Christmann at Tech Open Air 2024

Scaling Internationally: Adapting Hiring Practices Across Borders

As you look towards international expansion, job analysis can help you adapt hiring practices to fit different cultural and regulatory landscapes. Understanding local qualifications, experience equivalencies, and essential language skills are critical to building a competent global team.

Smart Hiring Fuels Smart Scaling

Effective hiring is more than a process—it’s a strategic investment in your company’s future. By employing a meticulous job analysis strategy and hiring for cultural fit, you can attract and retain top talent who not only fills the current gaps but also possesses the potential to lead and innovate as your business scales.

Remember, building a strong team is not just part of the journey; it’s the foundation of a thriving organization that can withstand the challenges of growth.

The Unique Pitch Competition on the Bus

The bus ride through Malta wasn’t just a journey from one location to another, it was an engaging activity that transformed a bus ride into a stage where startups battled it out in a high-energy pitch competition. This was not your typical pitch setting. Startups had to adapt to the moving environment, mastering their nerves and honing their pitch to perfection, all while navigating the turns and traverses of Malta’s scenic routes.

What made the bus ride truly unique was the level of interaction and engagement it facilitated. In a traditional pitch competition, startups are often separated from the audience by physical and psychological barriers. On the bus, these barriers dissolved. Investors, mentors, and fellow entrepreneurs were all part of the intimate audience, leading to immediate feedback and dynamic discussions right after each pitch on a great and distended ambience.

The competition reached its climax with the announcement of the winners, who were awarded valuable prizes that promised to further their entrepreneurial journeys. Joshua Ajayi founder of Paydai took home an Annual Membership, providing him year-long access to networking events and resources. Warren Mulvey Co-Founder of Affinity Sales Group won a GSTF25 PRO Ticket, granting him entry to the Global Sales Tech Festival and Katalin Ringer received a GSTF On Tour Ticket, allowing her access to all the global stops of the GSTF tour.

The bus ride also turned into a rolling networking event, where conversations started on the bus continued well into the after parties. This ongoing dialogue allowed for deeper connections, as participants shared insights and explored potential collaborations in a more relaxed, yet still professionally engaging, atmosphere.
