The Barcelona React Festival has brought together people from all over the world to generate awareness about the future. Over the course of the event, attendees have explored the latest advancements on how to make cities smarter, closer, and more sustainable, as well as the challenges we must overcome in the future.

In this line, the festival opened with an outstanding inspirational talk, some very interesting insights from the Barcelona City authorities, and during the day, great speakers shared their thoughts on how cities can be designed to be more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive. One of the main themes was the transformation of Barcelona by 2030, discussing how the city is evolving into a diverse economy, creating new opportunities for its residents. The focus was on developing a human-centric city with global ambition, where people can invest, live, and work.

Another key topic was new forms of leadership. As Barcelona evolves, it will require leaders who can inspire and motivate others to drive change. Speakers discussed the qualities that effective leaders possess and how they can be developed. They also talked about the role of technology in creating smarter cities and improving the quality of life for residents. During the day, attendees had the chance to network with other professionals in the industry, sharing ideas and experiences.

We attended the React festival on Tuesday the 28th of March, and it was fascinating to learn about the cities of the future and new forms of leadership. The festival has been a great success, bringing together an enthusiastic and diverse community to explore the future of European cities.

Interestingly, according to a report by the Cambra de Comerç de Barcelona, the city’s economy is projected to continue growing in the coming years, with an estimated 1.9% increase in GDP in 2022. The report highlights the importance of innovation, digitalization, and sustainability in driving economic growth in Barcelona. You can read more about it through this link.

Today, 30th of March, will be the last day of the three-day festival.

If you want to take a look at the talent map, you can use this link! You can find some cool information about the behaviour of Barcelona’s talent. the talent map is made in collaboration between Barcelona activa and LinkedIn. Presented by Sara Díaz Roig.

Who’s Hiring? English Speaking Jobs in Berlin after Corona

English Speaking jobs

After the Corona crisis, many companies are beginning to hire again. And if you were worrying about unemployment instead of practicing your German, you are in luck! There are still many companies hiring for English speaking jobs in Berlin.

Times have certainly been tough. The past four months have seen record unemployment, layoffs, reduced hours and few government subsidies to the industries hit hardest by the global coronavirus pandemic. The Berlin job market during Corona shrunk and in April 2020 the unemployment rate in Germany jumped up to 13.2 per cent.  In the wake of a global pandemic, many are wondering where their next paycheck will come from. Especially expats and internationals who require contracts to continue their visas.

Fix up your CV

The good news is that there are still lots of companies hiring for various positions. So the first step you need to do is fix up your CV!

This goes without saying but a new job, a new CV. Don’t be afraid to get creative either – did you learn how to play the guitar during lockdown? Did you start a blog or cook a new recipe every week? This shows initiative, ambition and an eagerness to learn new skills – qualities which are important to have for a new job and can help fill in the gaps of your unemployment for a potential employer.

Pro Tip:  Use this CV review service to help tailor your CV for free to improve your CV.

English Speaking Jobs

While the job market is saturated with competition there is still hope – even if you haven’t quite mastered the German language yet. There are many industries in Berlin still hiring which offer English speaking positions.

Pro Tip: It is better to search directly through company websites. Smaller companies and startups many find it expensive to post on general job boards.

Start with These

To start, check out these Berlin-based companies who often look for international employees. They even consider expertise in languages other than German or English an advantage.

The world’s largest chemical company BASF regularly posts job offers, especially the IT jobs do not always require profound German skills.

The online food-ordering service Delivery Hero Holding GmbH operates in 12 countries and is based in Berlin. They pride themselves in having an international startup atmosphere with English as a working language and offer jobs in IT, Operations, Marketing, Finance, and Content.

The multinational ebay offers positions around Germany and in Berlin for careers in IT and Management as well as many working student positions.

The Google office in Berlin has postings for Sales & Account Management, Marketing & Communication and more.

Finnish multinational Nokia offers positions for students and graduates as well as opportunities in IT and Project Management.

If you are missing the clubs in Berlin during the Corona closure, why not put your music knowledge and skills to the test by working with Soundcloud, or Deezer, the Berlin based streaming platform which is always looking for content creators, software developers, marketing and operations assistants.

The fashion e-commerce company Zalando was founded in Germany in 2008 and has since spread across Europe but still has its headquarters in Berlin. They offer positions in fields such as IT, Marketing, Controlling, Design, etc.

Some other top expat employers in Berlin include:

Ada Health Healthcare app             Arvato Call center

Auto1.comTransport                        AWS Amazon E-commerce

Babbel Language app                     Bertelsmann Various

Houzz Online retail platform            Infarm Urban farming

Movinga Moving platform                N26 Online banking

Omio Travel platform                       Onefootball Football app

Orderbird POS system                    Raisin Finance

Sitel Call center                               Sixt Car rental

SmartFrog Tech                               Spark Networks Online dating

Stoyo Advertising                             SumUp Payment solution

Sykes Call center                             Urban Sports Club Sport membership app

Glassdoor  offers jobs in English and other languages for Berlin-based companies and is less trafficked than the more popular sites such as Indeed which has been a staple for internationals looking for jobs since 2004.

Additionally, if your German isn’t terrible, it is worth searching through Monster and Xing which tend to be used more by German companies.

Remember to Keep Applying!

It is frustrating not to hear back from potential employers, but don’t give up! These resources and tips will help you succeed when searching for a job post corona. Remember to keep your eyes and ears open to network as much as you can. AiRelo at Hiring Success 2018 !

SmartRecruiters’ latest Hiring Success conference, the first European edition, happened on days 20-21of September, at Glashaus by the Spree river, one of the coolest spots in Berlin. During the 2-days-event, more than 200 attendees had the chance to connect, learn the last trends on the HR world and enjoy the last days of summer breeze before Autumn kicks in.

The slogan “You are who you hire” could not have fit better. Among the sessions in 3 different stages, a lot was spoken on how to find the best talents to supply the high demand in the tech industry. Another essential topic covered was how technology has changed how companies work, specifically in the Human Resources field. The keynote speakers shared some of the most innovative recruiting campaigns ever put together, and led an interactive workshop challenging left-brain functions to raise the bar on workplace creativity.

Still in the HR innovative solutions topic, Mario Paladini represented AiRelo in the Battle of the Bots, along with founders of Irish Recruiter, Jobpal and XORBOT. Artificial Intelligence is definitely a hot topic to save time & resources in the present and future HR processes.

The companies below are already using the white-label version of AiRelo, and our team is proving support with our Welcome package, helping to relocate onboarding employees.

And since our mission is to make international life easier, we’re spreading the word about a great initiative of our partners, Talent.io. Every Thursday they held a workshop for HRs and/or people interested in learning more about relocation, specially the EU Blue card visa.

Don’t miss the opportunity to check it out!

Work in Berlin

work in berlin Club GLOBALS

You’ve made the decision that you want to work in Berlin. But how are you going to make your dream a reality? What are the tips and tricks to finding a job in a new country quickly? Every country and city has their own way, which also includes the companies. So when you want to find a new job in Berlin it is important to know the best way to land your dream job with the desired company.

How to find work in Berlin?

Step 1 to finding a job is, to decide what kind of job you want.  In what area of the city do you want to work, what kind of work environment do you like? Those are all important questions to ask yourself. When you know what you want, you can search for specific jobs. To be sure that you find a job that you really like, you can use our partners to help you find the right one. They will show you the vacancies most suited to you and connect you with the perfect job.

Corporate culture

Once you have been offered a position in a company, the next step will be to prepare yourself for the new job. Berlin is an international city full of cultural diversity, so it is important to orientate yourself appropriately. It is also strongly advised that you are specially prepared for the first day as you will want to make a good first impression. In Germany, there is a clear distinction between the boss and employee. Most of the time it is important to use the term ‘Sie’ when addressing your boss or colleagues. These are just a few reminders to help you make a good impression when you start your new job.

Startup City Berlin

You know that you want to work in Berlin, but you don’t want to work for a boss? Then Berlin is perfect! Berlin is the city of startups, people also call it the ‘Capital City of the World’. Berlin offers a lot of options to start your own company. At first, all the co-working spaces Berlin offers, which you can read more about here. Those spaces are ideal for networking and for collaborating with other startups. Berlin is also a relatively cheap city. Rent is cheap and the daily living costs are also lower compared to other cities in Germany.

Finding an apartment

So now that you have sorted out a job in Berlin, the next question is, where are you going to live? There are many websites and companies offering accommodation in Berlin but a lot of the time the demand is, unfortunately, bigger than the supply. Social media sites such as Facebook, also have various groups you can join, where individuals are offering their rooms. However always be careful, and watch out for scammers. A smart decision would be to contact one of our partners who specialise in finding the perfect room/flat for people.

City Registration

When you finally succeed in finding an apartment, now all you have to do is the registration (Anmeldung) for the Burgeramt. It is a long process and waiting in the city hall for hours can become very tiresome. To avoid all of this hassle, and to make the process much easier for yourself, simply message AiRelo for free. The form will be completed in just a few minutes. You can reach AiRelo through Facebook Messenger, who then helps you fill in the form, and sends you the completed form by email. The last step is now to take the form to the city hall, and then you are all set!

Working in Germany – Occupations in Demand Today

Why work in Germany?

The labor market in Germany is highly attractive for many expats from all over the world due to its consistent growth and working conditions. Recently, the increasing demand for certain professions has led to a better inclusion of foreigners in society, thanks to easier administrative procedures in German cities. This article will provide further detail on the occupations currently in demand in Germany.

There are many advantages of living and working in Germany. First, the German economy is one of the three strongest economies worldwide and is still growing with its low unemployment rate (7%). Moreover, the strong social security system protecting the sick, disabled, unemployed or retired people is a great benefit that attracts expats from all over the world. Additionally, due to the increasing number of immigrants, the process of integration in German society has become much smoother and more comfortable.

However, the benefits of strong economy, good salaries, high standard of living and social benefits, a modern infrastructure and affordable, high-quality housing come with some challenges: learning the language and becoming comfortable in your new home.

The good news is that lately, the immigration law has become more permissive, especially for certain categories of workers. The reason for this policy change might lie in the high rate of aging which leads to a loss of around 250,000 workers yearly. It could also be due to a shortage of graduates in certain fields of study.

But let’s have a closer look at the sectors and professions that favor immigrants in the German labor market. The chances of getting a job and obtaining the working papers needed (e.g. visa, work permit, etc.) without much trouble are higher for people with vocational qualifications, doctors, innovative engineers and experts in technology, IT and science.

Doctors in demand

The German healthcare system is renowned for its dense hospitality network, professional medical practices and a generally high level of care. As a doctor in Germany, you benefit in several ways from this status. Doctors are not only highly appreciated by society, they are also well rewarded with an average salary for graduates being around €49,000 a year.

The need for doctors in Germany’s public sector is expected to increase in the coming years. The private sector is also in need of general practitioners. As for the immigration policies, you should know you are eligible and likely to obtain the medical license whether you are from the EU or not. Please check www.anerkennung-in-deutschland.de for more details.

Seeking Scientists and Engineers

Germany is often considered at the center of innovation due to its cutting-edge technological contributions in various fields such as automobile, X-ray, IT, chemical & pharmaceutical as well as biotech and nanotech sectors. The shortage of STEM graduates(science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) has lead to an increasingly high demand for scientists in this field.

Therefore the job prospects for graduates are excellent. The salaries vary between €35,000 and €40,000 and can reach up to €70,000 based on years of professional experience.

Be a Catering Caregiver

Finally, there has been a consistent increase in demand for caregivers and people with vocational training; These jobs also make access into the labor market much smoother.

In conclusion, if you are considering working in Germany and are qualified in one of the fields mentioned in this article, you should be aware that there is not only plenty of job opportunities but also administrative actions aimed at facilitating your access to the labor market. If you want more information on the recognition of foreign vocational qualifications in Germany, check www.anerkennung-in-deutschland.de.

We also have some information about how to obtain a Blue Card in Germany here. A blue card is essentially very similar to the green card in America – it grants foreigners from outside the EU permission to live and work in the country.

Get a Blue Card in Germany

We all know how difficult it is to find a good job or get a visa in a foreign country. Especially when the country is as exciting and in demand as Germany. We’re always looking for easy solutions to these problems – so we’ve decided to outline all the steps to obtain a blue card in Germany.

For those of you who don’t know, a blue card is very similar to the green card in America – it grants foreigners from outside the EU permission to live and work in the country. If you are a skilled and qualified worker seeking employment from any of these countries, you will need either a visa or a blue card before accepting employment!

  1. Australia
  2. Israel
  3. Japan
  4. Canada
  5. South Korea
  6. New Zealand
  7. The United States of America

Since the allotted time to stay in the country for members of these countries is approximately 3 months, it may be hard to find employment during this time. Luckily, you can still apply for a blue card in Germany. However, it is still recommended to apply for a visa while you are still in your home country since the time it takes to receive an approved visa is uncertain. It is also recommended to find employment before you travel to Germany. This way, your employer can assist you in getting an employment visa or a blue card.

Necessary steps to earn your Blue Card:

  • A filled out application form. This can be filled out by either you or your employer. In order to obtain the application, you must first ensure you have all the required documents.
  • Gather all the correct documents. The foreigner’s office needs to see many documents before granting you a blue card. This includes a university degree, proof of employment, recommendation letters, a valid Passport/travel documentation, proof of application fee payment, and more. It is recommended to begin this process of collecting documents 3-6 months before you arrive in Germany.
  • Go to your local foreigners’ office and hand in the paperwork and fill out the application. This step is perhaps the most tedious of them all. It is recommended to arrive early in the morning right when the office opens. If not, you will have to stand in line or come back another day. It is also possible to make an appointment in person, but you will have to do this several months in advance to ensure you will be seen.
  • Wait for approval. After handing in the application, you must wait for a maximum of 3 months/90 days for your request to be approved. You also have the right to appeal the decision within three weeks of the decision’s arrival. You can also hire an attorney to speak on your behalf.

Additional things your will need

It is important to know you will also need:

A German Tax number since all employees are required to pay taxes.

You are not required to pay taxes if you work at a company that pays under 450Euros a month (mini-job).

Depending on marital status, taxpayers are divided into different tax groups:

  • Married
  • Single
  • Divorced
  • Children or not, etc.

Tax payments are done according to the group you are part of. To obtain your German tax number, you will need to go to the Burgeramt and ask for a form. It is very similar to the Anmeldung process!

You will also need to acquire proper Health Insurance (Expat, Public, or Private). This is not quite as difficult as it sounds! Many companies offer health insurance for their employees. If your employer does not, there are many international health insurance companies that offer decent coverage for a reasonably low monthly rate. You can find more information about Germany’s different health insurance options here.

Getting a blue card isn’t quite as difficult as it seems. As long as you carefully follow the steps and ensure you have all the correct documentation, you should have your blue card in no time!

Best of luck! 8)

Not that long ago, UK citizen decided to leave the European Union… What a shock, pools were not optimistic regarding the results but still did not expect a majority of  “Leave” votes. Anyways, now, companies and people are wondering if they should stay in the UK. Either hoping for the best by staying or leave now while European cities fight to become the new London.

One of those cities is, of course, Berlin. The city of unlimited possibilities where old and new mix in a unique and charming way. Described as “Poor but Sexy” by its former Mayor, Klaus Wowereit, in a television interview from 2004. Berlin is also dynamic and always changing… Like a startup. In Berlin, every 20 minutes, a start-up is founded. This demonstrates the attraction to Startup that the city already has.

Key Criteria to Settle in

The European Startup Initiative pointed out 4 factors that founders use to decide where to set up their company.

The most noteworthy criteria is the talent acquisition possibilities. Even if usually startups start with less than 5 employees the goal is to grow fast and employ more and more people as the company grows. Consequently, if the city you settled in does not provide you the amount of talent you need to expand it is a real deal breaker.

As you can observe, the ecosystem is the second more important criteria. An ecosystem is a whole environment where startups can evolve in. Inside you can find institutions such as the universities (pool of talents), big companies, funding and support organizations etc. The ecosystem encompasses everything that could help a startup to grow.

In order to be a startup hub, Berlin needs to full fill those criteria and to possess a good ecosystem where a startup can evolve and grow.

This image was taken from the European Startup initiative’s Report & The Startup Heatmap Europe is based on an online survey opened to founders from November 2015 to April 2016.

Focus on the Ecosystem

This image was taken from the Startup Genome Report from 2017.

The Global Startups Ecosystem Ranking of 2017 from Startup Genome ranked in the first position the Silicon Valley, the innovation place by excellence. Home of Facebook, Google, Netflix and so many others, the Silicon Valley is not near to be dethroned.

London arrives in 3d position and Berlin stand up in the 7th becoming the 1st EU city in this ranking.

Consequently, we can say that Berlin has the best ecosystem for startups in the European Union.

How Berlin attempted and succeeded to become the European Startup Hub?

Now that we demonstrated how Berlin and European startup hub belong together, we can try to understand how Berlin is, by its events and population, providing a great ecosystem for startups to grow.

We organized with CBC “Europe’s hottest startup capital – Why Berlin?” in January and in March 2017 we organized with CCG the 3d Berlin International Entrepreneurship Forum: Startup Connect Berlin. Connecting Startups with Investors and institution it was a great way to connect, match B2B and B2G as well as increasing the knowledge transfer thanks to Senior high-level International Speaker.

Light, funny and full of truth, the pitch doctor reloading Berlin pitch tells you why Berlin is the best choice for startups.

You can watch his speech from Startup Connect Berlin ?

His pitch really grasps what makes Berlin attractive even if buildings are not a pleasure for the eyes and despite all the things that could deter people to move in the city. Berlin stays charming and appealing by its unique architecture, inhabitants, culture and diversity.

Berlin still needs to maintain its 1st position by increasing its attraction

Finally, London still stays attractive on some points for startups and is still going out of the EU. So no one really knows what the outcome will be. In addition, Berlin is not the only city fighting to take over London’s title as European Startup Hub. Other European capitals like Barcelona, Amsterdam, Paris and way more are trying to attract startups. However, Berlin ecosystem is a big plus and so many events for startups are happening every day.

Will we see you at the next startup event, the Startup Jobs Fair 2017?

Get your tickets here and come to the two networking party to have the opportunity to casually meet who might be your future employer. Attend the day fair to have the chance to convince hiring people that YOU are the one they need!

We look forward to seeing you at SJF17 and seeing if Berlin maintain its first position as the European Startup Hub in the years to come!

Do you think Berlin will remain 1st startup hub in the EU? Let us know in the comments!
